- What is a Himalayan salt lamp, and how is it made?
Pink salt lamps are essentially large clumps of salt, the same salt labeled "Pink Himalayan Salt" which is used for a variety of purposes from cooking to bathing products. Pink salt has fantastic mineral properties and adds a unique flavour when used in cooking, click here to check out our Pink cooking salt! Pink salt is mined in the mountains of Pakistan, from ocean deposits left from millions of years ago, making pink salt, a sea salt. The salt is mined in huge chunks and is then hand carved down into the smaller clumps used all over the world as lamps. As you can imagine, these lamps are hand crafted making each one unique in colour size and appearance. Lamps that crack or break in the shaping process and turned into granular or fine table salt. Once the clumps of salt have been grouped by size and weight, a hole is drilled in the base for the globe or candle, a wooden base is attached and the finished product is shipped to be loved and admired in homes throughout the world.
Many rumours exist of the health benefits of salt lamps, but we will leave that up to you to decide. We love our lamps because, their glow warms a room, they are unique and beautiful, and most of all, who doesn't want a million year old glowing salty rock in their living room!
Placement of your lamp (Important)
Rule #1 - Salt naturally absorbs moisture in the air, so its best to keep your lamp somewhere fairly dry if possible, its not ideal to keep them outside, near evaporative cooling, or in a room with excessive humidity.
Rule #2 - Its best to keep your salt lamp on 24/7, this keeps the salt nice and warm and will reduce the likelihood of sweating. (Sweating is when your lamp absorbs moisture in the air, and it can bead on the outside of the lamp a little like sweat.) Turning your lamp on and off every day will potentially increase the likelihood of sweating, as the salt will warm up once the lamp is on, and will pull in moisture as the lamp cools when you turn it off. If you wish to turn your lamp on and off daily we recommend removing the fitting & cable (Careful it could be hot) form the lamp, and storing is separately over night, to avoid moisture build up in the globe and electrics. When your lamp is off store it away from any power sockets or electrics incase of sweating.
Rule #3 - Never keep your lamp on top of other electrics ie: On top of your tv. Again this is an issue of sweating, if your lamp does sweat you down want any moisture to run down into your tv or stereo.
Caring for you lamp
Salt lamps dont need too much care or maintenance, just switch it off every once in a while, wipe down with a damp cloth, turn it back on.
